1.
If I have a question about a crime that occurred to me how can I get the name of the investigator who is working the case?
You can contact the Police Department at (319) 273-8612 and ask to speak to the Investigative Unit. You will be transferred and an investigator will be happy to assist you in any way he/she can.
2.
How do I keep from becoming a victim of a fraud or identity theft?
First, you should not give out any of your personal information to anyone, especially over the phone. Second, do not have any personal information (social security number or date of birth) on your checks. Lastly, don’t leave personal items (checks, driver’s license, or social security number) where people have access to them.
3.
If a crime occurs in a city other than Cedar Falls can I report the crime to the Cedar Falls Police Department?
No, the Cedar Falls Police Department does not have the jurisdiction in other cities and the crime must be reported to the police department where it occurred.
4.
Are all reported crimes assigned to an investigator?
No, most cases assigned to an investigator have something that can be followed up on (a suspect, missing merchandise that can be located, etc.). If there is no more follow-up that can be done the case is closed inactive with no investigator assigned.
5.
If I am a victim of a sexual assault what should I do?
Victims of sexual assaults can do several things that will aid police officers in the investigation of the victim’s case. Though it is sometimes very hard and embarrassing, one of the best things a victim can do is report the sexual assault immediately. As time goes on, physical evidence may be lost as well as the victim and other witnesses’ ability to accurately describe to officers what had occurred. A victim of sexual assault should not shower, brush their teeth, drink anything, or use a bathroom if at all possible. Taking these steps can ensure that physical evidence is not lost before a sexual assault evidence collection exam is complete.
6.
I think the person living across the street from me is a sex offender, how can I find out if he is or is not?
Sex offenders who are classified at moderate or high risk to re-offend are required to register their addresses with the Sheriff’s Office in their county. This information can be located with a search at the Iowa Sex Offender Registry. If the desired information is not located online, a person can fill out a request for registry information at their local Sheriff’s Office.
